Frequently Asked Questions

Got Almond Cow questions? We've got answers!
How long does Almond Cow milk typically last in the fridge?

Homemade, plant-based milks typically last 3-5 days in the fridge. You can add a pinch of sea salt to the water in the base when making milk to help with freshness.

Can you use hot water in the base of the machine?

Yes!

Can you use quick oats instead of old fashioned to make oat milk?

Yes, either is fine.

Does the Almond Cow heat the milk? Is it still raw?

In order to protect the nutrients in the ingredients you’re using, the Almond Cow does not use any heat! The milk-making process will finish at the same temperature it started at.

How much milk is made in one batch?

5-6 cups per batch.

Do you have to soak the nuts beforehand?

Soaking the nuts is not required but we do recommend it for a smoother milk.

Can coconut water or other liquids be used in the base of the machine in place of regular water?

Yes!

How much does it cost to make a cup of milk?

If you use the recommended amount of one cup of almonds, for example, you’ll be saving about 30% versus store bought milk, and getting a milk much richer in actual almonds, since many store-bought milk are primarily water and additives. Not to mention, you’ll be left with the remaining almond pulp, which has many uses.

If you made oat milk in your Almond Cow, the savings would be closer to 90% or higher. Keep in mind you can use any combination of nuts, seeds, grains, oats, which allows you to control the price of whatever plant-based milk you decide to make. A cup of almond milk made in your Almond Cow versus store-bought milk would cost less than 10% of what is commonly used in store-bought versions. See:

Can rice milk be made in the Almond Cow?

Yes, but the rice should be cooked before using it in the Almond Cow.

Is milk separation normal?

Yes, separation is totally normal! Plant-based milks without additives and fillers naturally separate over time. Just shake it up and it will be ready to enjoy!

Can you make yogurt in the AC?

You can use milk from your Almond Cow to make yogurt. Check out our dairy-free coconut yogurt recipe here.

Can soy milk be made in the Almond Cow?

Yes, but the soybeans need to be soaked and peeled before using them to make milk. Check out our soy milk recipe here.

Can you use just fruit in the AC?

Yes, but this isn’t recommended. Fruit is not the best base for milk.

How do I clean my Almond Cow?

After using the Almond Cow, rinse out the inside of the base with water. Detach the filter basket, empty the pulp into a container for storage, and rinse the stainless steel parts of the top where the blade is. Do not get the top of the Almond Cow (where the button is) wet as this can damage the motor. Rinse out the filter basket and you’re good to go! Read More

What is the white collector cup for?

This is a collector cup that serves as a stand for the top of the Almond Cow once you’ve made the milk, allowing excess liquid to drain out.

How do I make the milk thicker?

Natural plant-based milk isn’t thick. Thickness is normally the result of artificial thickening agents meant to make milks seem “silky”. There are natural tricks to making milk thicker--- we recommend adding rolled oats along with other ingredients to make the milk thicker, naturally.

Sometimes I have trouble attaching the filter basket. How do you recommend doing this?

Hold the Almond Cow top with your non-dominant hand and twist to attach using your dominant hand. The fit is intentionally tight to make the blending more complete. See here for more details and to see a video.

How do you recommend cleaning the filter basket?

A sponge and water will normally suffice, but over time the pores in the filter basket will need a deeper clean. We recommend an extended vinegar-water soak. Just take 4 cups of water and add 4tbsp of vinegar and allow to soak overnight.

My Almond Cow machine starts blending, stops and then starts blending again, is this normal?

Yes! The Almond Cow has a 3-stage blending cycle to help ensure proper blending of the ingredients. Once the cycle is complete the light on top of the machine will stop flashing and be solid and the blending will completely stop.

How is this different than a blender with a nut milk bag?

The Almond Cow automatically separates the pulp from the milk, so you don’t have to! In less than a minute, you have milk that’s ready to drink and pulp that’s ready to enjoy!

Are the ingredients whole or ground?

The ingredients used in Milk Medleys are mostly whole or split, with the exception of chopped dates, which blend into milk more efficiently than whole dates.

Why aren’t they gluten-free?

While Milk Medleys are produced in a Gluten-Free Certified facility, full gluten traceability on this supply pathway has not yet been finalized. Please look for this in the future.

Can you use 1/2 a packet and save the other 1/2 or do you have to use the whole thing?

We recommend that you use a whole packet of Milk Medleys per batch of milk to ensure complete blending.

Is the milk frothy?

All Milk Medleys blends are intended to blend perfectly in milk makers with some foam still present once the milk making cycle is completed. For milk frothing after blending, we would specifically recommend our Almonds ‘n’ Dates Milk Medley blend.

What are Milk Medleys?

We at Almond Cow lead busy lives, and we know you do too. Making milk in your Almond Cow is already quick and easy, but it still takes valuable time to find your favorite new milk recipe, buy all the ingredients and then experiment with the measurements until you find your dream milk.

Milk Medleys are Almond Cow’s solution to all of this! Each of these home compostable sachets contain the perfect balance of whole ingredients and natural sweetness (dates!) to help you make our most popular milk recipes a breeze. Simply tear the top off a Milk Medley packet, pour the entire contents into your Filter Basket, add water to the base, and press go! No measuring, no mess!

Why would you use Milk Medleys versus ingredients in bulk bags?

Making milk in your Almond Cow is already quick and easy, but we recognize that for some customers, it takes a lot of experimentation (and money!) to find your favorite milk recipes.
